It has been said, life imitates art.
If this premise be true, then it’s apparently evident that art, (the arts), are integral and important aspects of life. Even more important is how and when art is integrated into our lives.
Creative expression is manifest in many ways. Dance, theatre, music, visual arts, performing arts, spoken word and poetry are all means of allowing the Soul to surface and be shared with others. Children who are exposed to the arts at an early age tend to fair better in school and usually develop stronger social skills. The performing arts are an excellent way for children (and adults) to release tension, stress and pent up energy that might manifest other than as beautiful expressions of inner thoughts and feelings.
Andrea Nalls, Artistic Director for Phusion Performing Arts Alliance has an apparently keen understanding of the need for children to be afforded the opportunity to express themselves. Housed in the Value City Mall Shopping Center on Memorial Drive, Phusion is an unassuming powerhouse of talented young folks. Artistic instruction is offered in ballet, tap, hip hop, keyboard, theatre and many more. The organization is the brainchild and vision of Mrs. Nalls. With the help of her husband John, her family, and many dedicated parents, Phusion has grown from a few children in the basement of Mrs. Nalls’ home to a 4,000 square foot school instructing well over 200 children and young adults, with a company cast of nearly 100.
Nalls credits one of her late dance instructors with inspiring her and giving her the love of and appreciation for performing arts in general and dance specifically. Her love for the arts permeates through the school’s instructors, the children it serves and the dedicated parents at Phusion. Children are taught from a professional perspective with an emphasis on great expectations from each and every child. Classes are offered nearly every day of the week at various skill levels. Those children exemplifying the mission, vision and above average artistic ability are afforded the opportunity to audition for placement in the Phusion’s company.
Phusion is much more than a “ballet school”. It is an alliance of people working towards the mission and goal of enhancing the lives of the children enrolled as well as the community at large.
